Vaporization 101

The basics

Sick of smoking?

Today there are many different types of cannabis vaporizers on the market. In fact, there are dozens and with so many choices it can be overwhelming and confusing as to which is most appropriate for you..

In this article, we will discuss the benefits of vaping and why many people have chosen to stop combusting entirely!

Why is smoking pot harmful?

When marijuana is smoked (combusted), more than 100 toxins and compounds are released.

Over time, these carcinogens can be harmful to your health and even cause cancer.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH's) are the result of incomplete combustion and are prevalent in marijuana smoke.

Two of the most common ones are Benzene and Napthalene.

How does vaporization help?

When using a vaporizer, combustion is avoided by heating the marijuana to much lower temperatures.

Once the cannabis has been heated properly, cannabinoid rich vapor is released and can be inhaled directly from a vaporizer or collected in a bag first and then inhaled.

The recommended range is 180-220 degrees Celsius (356 F - 428 F), however, different temperatures will give you different effects (lower temperatures = more of a sativa/head high, higher temperatures = more of an indica/body high).

This process produces cannabinoids without most of the tar and unwanted by-products associated with smoking, which is why it has gained so much popularity over the last decade.

One of the most recognizable vaporizers on the market, the Volcano, has been helping medical patients worldwide since 2000!!

What type of vape should I choose?

Everyone has different needs and you must consider several things before you buy your first vape

  • Where will I use it most? At home or on the go?
  • Does it need to be discreet?
  • Will you have access to a power supply?
  • What is your budget?

If you do not plan on medicating outside of the house:
A desktop vaporizer is the best choice because they are more powerful (not running on a battery pack) and offer more versatility, especially if you want to use it with glass or other types of attachments.

In general, desktop vaporizers have much more accurate temperature control systems, which can be very important when you are trying to vape at specific temperatures.

The downside is that they must be plugged in all the time in order to work.

Keep in mind these devices can be very costly, with the Volcano (digital) currently retailing for $599.

Some cheaper options include the Vapexhale Evo, which retails for $319.99 and the Arizer Extreme Q for $169.99.

If you plan on using it everywhere:

There are tons of portable vaporizers on the market, but they come at a price.

Because of the high/constant temperatures needed to efficiently vape cannabis, a large battery is needed to keep it running. This can limit the devices discreetness and effectiveness.

Portable vaporizers can also end up combusting marijuana quite easily due to cheap components and inaccurate temperature control systems.

The result is a market filled with lackluster choices, the majority of them made in China with unreliable parts that have been known to cause health issues themselves.

Fortunately, the company behind the Volcano, Storz-Bickel, makes two different portables that have been tested and approved for medical use of cannabis.

The Mighty and Crafty have been around since 2015, but are expensive at $349 and $279.

Two other popular portables on the market are the Arizer Solo 2($200) and the Pax 3($200).

Now that you have all this information, you can make an informed decision about the benefits of smoking vs. vaping cannabis and start living healthy today!
