Not everyone believes in aromatherapy, but everyone could stand to relax a little. Essential oils have been used for medicinal purposes since ancient times. These days, it's easy to be skeptical about their benefits when their biggest proponents seem to be hipsters and soulless, money-hungry wellness brands; but they have proven benefits. From anxiety relief and sleep aid to killing certain types of harmful bacteria better than antibiotics (as one study at John Hopkins found), essential oils can bring relief where no other treatment can.
"Aromatherapy has been used for centuries," says Harpreet Gujral, program director of integrative medicine at Sibley Memorial Hospital. "When inhaled, the scent molecules in essential oils travel from the olfactory nerves directly to the brain and especially impact the amygdala, the emotional center of the brain."
Since essential oils are plant extracts, inhaling their vapors can't hurt you, while applying oils directly to the skin can cause irritation or a severe reaction if you happen to be allergic to their plant of origin. So use common sense if you have plant allergies or sensitive skin. Gujral adds, "Essential oils don't work for everyone, but there's no harm in trying them as long as you use them in a safe way, Even if they just boost your mood, it can make a positive impact on your health and well-being."
If you're still skeptical, why not give aromatherapy a try while also accessorizing with one of these diffuser necklaces:
This starburst design adds classic, antique style to your accessories. Packaged in a small gift bag from The Oil Collection, this locket comes on a 30-inch long chain and comes with four black and white felt pads to soak up your favorite scent.
This two-piece set comes with a stainless steel snake chain and a black wax rope for the two pendants. Each Tree of Life design pops open, allowing you to select one of 12 colorful felt pads to soak in your favorite essential oil. Not only are they durable; the two designs are diverse enough for casual wear or special occasions.
This rose gold locket is made of hypo-allergenic stainless steel and has dual magnetic closures, which safely lock the oil inside. With its three washable felt pads, you can turn this simple accessory into a floating spa filled with your favorite scent.
As this writer's favorite (as someone who's wearing this pendant right now), these dual stainless steel necklaces have a unisex design in silver and black to match anybody's style. For ideal use, add 3-5 drops of your favorite essential oil(s) in the bottom barrel and add a felt strip in the color of your choice to the top barrel. The oil and its vapors soak into the felt strip as you go about your day surrounded by your favorite scent.
Lava stones are classic favorite among aromatherapy users, as Basalt (also known as lava rocks) is said to be a stone of rebirth–but mostly, true lava rock is very porous and so absorbs essential oils very well. This lava rock teardrop pendant comes with eight small lava stones to absorb your favorite oil. Pop it safely inside the pendant and enjoy your favorite scent for days.
